Spring Mowing

Twice already

the neighbors have mowed their lawn

each time edging into my uncut yard

as if to say, it's time, past time.

Amid the dead daffodils,

scraggly grasses, dandelions, buttercups

and weeds there are lots and lots

of tiny delicate violets.

She cried when I decapitated

the violets; and today,

on a beautiful spring afternoon

I too am crying.

  1. Morning rain persuaded
    the wedding planner she
    sets up chairs indoors.

    A Hawaiian rainbow
    arched between clouds
swinging them aside for the sun
    shine sponging
    white guest chairs
    mushroomed in the grass.

    The sun set
    leaving only wet
    on my face
    saying I do.

  2. Another bloody evening gift
    another rodent stilled,
delicate tail curved like a question mark
    white belly, red neck
    I take it back outside
    place it in pine needles,
    under a bowl,
where months later its skull will emerge
    like an autumn egg.
